From 5G to 6G and the Trends Shaping the Future of Networks

Jesse Falk

We’ve been keeping a close eye on the trends that will shape the next decade of networks. 5G already set the pace for high-speed, low-latency communication, but 6G is coming, promising even faster speeds and near-instant connections. On top of that, AI is moving from being just an application to a core part of the network itself, helping infrastructure diagnose and repair itself.

What’s exciting is seeing these trends move from theory into real projects. From advanced switchboards to satellite integration, the work happening right now is laying the foundation for the networks we’ll all rely on in the coming years.  Indeed, we’re already building the infrastructure that makes these advancements possible for our partners in Australia, the Pacific and the globe.

Key trends we’re enabling:

  • A Shift to Open Architecture: We're helping to build the core networks of the future by supplying advanced switchboards and power management solutions that are essential for the shift to an OpenRAN architecture.
  • The Rise of Non-Terrestrial Networks: We build distributed ground stations and satellite infrastructure critical for the integration of LEO satellites. We are directly contributing to a market projected to reach over US$30 billion by 2030.
  • Decentralised Infrastructure: Our products and expertise are enabling the creation of distributed AI data centres and innovative solutions like High Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS). This shift will transform billing models from data volume to Quality of Service (QoS).

These shifts introduce new opportunities and challenges, especially with the rapidly evolving power and enclosure requirements. Our expertise in distributed ground stations, power management, and fibre hauling is essential for bringing these next-generation networks to life. We offer engineering and collaboration services to ensure our network partners have access to the advanced knowledge we've accumulated over the past 50 years, guaranteeing the most advanced solutions possible. The next 18 months will bring significant developments as 5G-NTN comes online and we’re already well-ahead in partnering to build a seamless global network.
